New tool to predict the optimal time of intervention to control the nymphs of Philaenus spumarius, insect vector of Xylella fastidiosa in Europe Researchers from two CSIC institutes developed a predictive tool that can help limit the populations of the main insect vector of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which causes diseases that seriously affect several key crops in our agriculture, such as olive trees, vines and almond trees. Philaenus spumarius is a polyphagous insect of the group commonly known as cicadas, which is present in practically the entire northern hemisphere. For a long time, it was unknown to agriculture, but the detection of the X. fastidiosa bacterium in Europe in 2013 has considerably increased the interest in its study, since this insect is the main vector of this bacterium in Europe. In particular, strains of this bacterium have devastated olive plantations in Apulia (Italy), causing the uprooting of millions of olive trees, as well as thousands of almond trees in Mallorca and Alicante and at this moment it poses a serious threat to both vineyards and almond and also olive groves in Andalusia. Understanding the life cycle and phenology of P. spumarius is key to limiting the spread of X. fastidiosa and its impact on different plantations. The study recently published in the journal Environmental Entomology of the American Society for Entomology (ESA) was conducted between the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ICA-CSIC) and the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC, CSIC-UIB). This study, based on field data obtained in different localities of the Iberian Peninsula, proposes a mathematical model with which a tool has been built to predict the time of hatching of P. spumarius eggs. The research team monitored P. spumarius eggs, from oviposition to hatching, along with daily temperatures and relative humidities at four field locations in the Community of Madrid that were at different altitudes. The data collected were used to construct a model of growth as a function of cumulative temperature (degree-days) to predict egg hatching of the insect in the Iberian Peninsula. In addition, the model was validated with field observations made at different locations in Spain. The resulting model has been used to develop a decision support tool to calculate the optimal time to apply control measures on P. spumarius nymphs, such as surface tillage or weeding. The results suggest that applying control measures on two different dates would optimize the elimination of nymph populations in the field. This would considerably reduce the risk of disease spread. The tool developed calculates the probability of hatching of P. spumarius eggs using the information provided by AEMET stations, which can be accessed through this link: https://pseggs.ifisc.uib-csic.es/. How networks avoid collapsing under heavy navigational use? IFISC researchers discover that the evolution of networks has a hidden mechanism for naturally creating bypasses that facilitate navigability.The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, shows how bypasses exist in various networks, such as in the human brain, thus achieving substantial energy and time savings.We live surrounded by networks: traffic, infrastructures, WWW, etc. We also live embedded into networks, such as those formed by our familial and friendship ties, collaborations, social media. But more importantly, we are conformed by networks, such as our muscle-bone networks, organ-organ communication networks, vascular webs, brain networks, among others. All these networks exist to allow the navigation of items between their nodes at different time scales. How is it that we are not constantly suffering from the collapse of these networks due to such intensive navigational use? Our hearts are submitted to a heavy blood flow, particularly when we perform exercise training. However, our hearts create “collateral vessels” or “natural bypasses”, formed by very small, hair-like vessels (capillaries) that interconnect coronary arteries and their service areas. These natural bypasses facilitate the blood flow in situations of high demand, such as during exercise training or when occlusions are present in the main arteries. IFISC (UIB-CSIC) researchers Ernesto Estrada and Lucas Lacasa, together with Jesús Gómez-Gardeñes (Universidad de Zaragoza), have published a study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA which shows how the formation and evolution of networks has a hidden mechanism for naturally creating bypasses that, they show, facilitate network navigability. This mechanism increases the efficiency of the communication between pairs of entities (nodes) in a network as the system complexifies, by saving some energy in the process that the system can use later for other functions. In a network there are always paths that connect two nodes with a minimum number of steps. These are called shortest (geodesic) paths between the corresponding nodes. However, to navigate a network using shortest paths one necessary needs to have a map of its global structure, something which is an impossible task in many real-world situations like in the brain. Then, most of the navigation in these networks occurs through diffusive processes, such as when coffee is dropped in a glass of milk. The authors discovered that during network evolution, some randomly-created paths emerge as an alternative to the shortest ones. While these alternative paths connect the same pair of nodes using routes slightly longer than the shortest path, these paths in turn traverse less connected regions of the network. The authors developed a mathematical theory that showed that these alternative paths allow a navigator without a map of the whole network to arrive at their destination with less chances of getting lost than when using the shortest path. To quantify whether a “blind” navigator would prefer to go through the shortest or the alternative path they defined a way to quantify the amount of energy saved by going through the alternative route. Sometimes, navigating through these alternative routes compensate the navigator to use a slightly longer path. Researchers called it network “bypasses”. Bypasses cannot be created without a certain cost to the network. Such cost is paid in terms of disorder, i.e., increasing the entropy of the network. However, they found that a little increase in the disorder of a network is enough to generate useful bypasses. Estrada, Gómez-Gardeñes and Lacasa applied their findings to study a wide range of real-world networks ranging from social, technological, infrastructural, biological, and informational ones. In general, they found that most of the networks contain bypasses, but some contain significantly more than others. At the bottom of the ranking, they found networks that had not been designed to be navigated in a random way, such as power grids or electronic circuits. The lack of effective bypasses in these networks is an indication of their vulnerability, as we have seen during blackouts –a power grid failure cascade--, the authors argue. In these cases, the amount of energy saved by using the existing bypasses is indeed relatively low. Conversely, the authors found networks --such as the human brain-- where using bypasses saves a lot of energy and time in the communication process. For instance, the analysis of a human brain network displaying regions that coactivate together identifies that there are pairs of regions whose communication via bypasses represents more than 200% of time saved in comparison with the navigation via the shortest path, which points out the importance of these results to understand the plasticity of complex systems.Image: A network in which the nodes (yellow and green balls) are connected with links. Dr. Ernesto Estrada, IFISC researcher, elected Fellow of the Network Science Society Dr. Ernesto Estrada, researcher at IFISC (CSIC-UIB), has been elected Fellow by the prestigious Network Science Society (NetSci). As one of only six individuals elected in the class of 2023, Dr. Estrada's exceptional contributions to the field of network science and its applications have earned him this distinction. This recognition of Dr. Estrada's research work is awarded to him “for his significant contributions to network science and its applications, including seminal works on geometric and spatial networks, chemical graph theory, as well as for his outstanding editorial work”. The announcement was made public at the awards ceremony during the NetSci 2023 conference. He has received several academic distinctions, including the Wolfson Research Merit Award of the Royal Society of London, Outstanding Scientist of the International Academy of Mathematical Chemistry, elected Member of the Academia Europaea, of the Latin American Academy of Sciences, elected Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. He is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Complex Networks, published by Oxford University Press (OUP) and member of the Editorial Board of SIAM J. Appl. Math., Proc. Roy. Soc. A, Mathematics, among others. His research is focused on the mathematical analysis of networks as well as on their applications to infrastructural, ecological, social and biological problems. IFISC People: Sara Cloux and Dhafer Ferchichi We are glad to introduce Sara Cloux and Dhafer Ferchichi to the other IFISC members.Sara Cloux completed her doctorate in Marine Sciences, Technologies, and Management at the University of Santiago de Compostela. Her research focused on the Lagrangian transport of marine debris into the ocean and the transport of moisture into the atmosphere. At IFISC she will work as a postdoctoral researcher with Cristóbal López, Emilio Hernández-García and Enrico Ser-Giacomi in the LAMARCA project. The aim of this project is to further understand the role of oceanic transport in marine litter (microplastics and meso/macrolitter) dispersion and accumulation areas in the sea surface, along the water column and over the seafloor. She will be working on this project for a year and a half.Dhafer Ferchichi comes from the Pasteur Institute in Tunisia. At IFISC he will work together with Manuel Matias and Tomàs Sintes in the SEDIMENT project. This is an European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) project dedicated to the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies for the analysis of satellite images in order to characterize the Posidonia meadows of the Balearic Islands, which are an ecosystem threatened by human activity, and its evolution over time. His research has focused on the design of agent-based models for the study of the emergence of collective behaviors, the spread of infectious diseases and, in general, the modeling of complex systems. IFISC hosts the Complexity72h workshop IFISC (Institute of Cross-disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems, UIB-CSIC) will host the fourth edition of the Complexity72h workshop, which will take place at Palma de Mallorca, Spain, on June 26-30 2023. Complexity72h is an interdisciplinary workshop for young researchers in complex systems. Participants form teams and carry out projects in a three days' time, i.e. 72 hours. The goal of each team is to upload on the arXiv (or similar repositories) a report of their work by the end of the event. The editions of 2018 and 2019 were a success: 11 out of 11 projects have become arXiv preprints and new collaborations have been born. The 2020 edition was canceled due to the pandemic. But we are now back for a 2023 edition, which will take place in Palma (Mallorca, Spain) on June 26-30. Speakers at the workshop will include Márton Karsai (CEU, Austria), Jesús Gómez-Gardeñes (University of Zaragoza, Spain) and James Watson (Oregon State University, USA). The language puzzle: how Physics helps unlock linguistic mysteries The field of language dynamics, which applies physics to linguistics, is a relatively new interdisciplinary area of research. Physicists have successfully used their methods to study various aspects of language. By analyzing linguistic data and using mathematical models, physicists have contributed to explain how certain words spread across a country and how languages evolve and split into dialects. Language dynamics also involves studying language shift and the coexistence of multiple languages within a population. Specifically, physicists have used statistical physics and computational tools to analyze large datasets, such as written texts and tweets, to uncover regularities and patterns in language use, revealing insights into language complexity, social interactions, and cultural variations. IFISC (UIB-CSIC) researcher Dr. David Sánchez, together with Dr. Marco Patriarca (NICPB) and Dr. Els Heinsalu (NICPB), both IFISC alumni, discuss in a popular science article in Physics World the latest advancements of the field. From how swear words spread out in Japan, to how different languages are mixed in regions such as Catalonia or Belgium, the article covers for a nonspecialist audience the transversal research between physics and linguistics with the aim of elucidating the intricate social phenomena of linguistics and language itself. Unveiling the role of Coulomb interactions in high-energy electron collisions A group of three research teams, in which IFISC (UIB-CSIC) researcher Sungguen Ryu participated, have conducted groundbreaking experiments demonstrating that high-energy electrons repel each other upon collision in a beam splitter due to strong Coulomb interactions. These results clearly show the importance of Coulomb interaction when manipulating few electron excitations, in contrast to the photons. The experiments, published in Nature nanotechnology, fall within the field of electronic quantum optics and focus on high-frequency quantum transport. By utilizing fast voltage pulses in the gigahertz range, researchers can emit single electrons in nanoscale electrical circuits and manipulate them using electronic components similar to optical elements. Such electron excitations enable an electronic analog of the Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment. In the original version of photons (see Fig. a), the photons tend to bunch together due to the bosonic nature. In the electronic equivalent (see Fig. b), the electrons behave as fermions. If the colliding electron pair was low-energy excitations near the Fermi-sea, the screened Coulomb interaction is negligible and the pair would be splitted into different paths due to the Pauli-exclusion principal. However, if the Coulomb interaction effect is present, the fate of the colliding electron pair becomes more complicated. In separate experiments, the research teams employed various setups, yet they all reached the same conclusion. When high-energy electrons are emitted above the Fermi sea in an electric conductor and simultaneously arrive on each side of an electron beam splitter, they repel each other because of the strong Coulomb interactions, not because of the Pauli exclusion principle. The experiments involved using single electron pumps to emit charges in a semiconductor structure containing a two-dimensional electron gas. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, chiral edge states formed along the sample boundaries, acting as pathways for the emitted electrons. The electrons were guided to a central region, where they collided on either side of an electron beam splitter. These three experiments collectively demonstrate that Coulomb interactions play a dominant role in the antibunching effect observed when high-energy electrons collide in a beam splitter. This discovery has significant implications for quantum information processing with electronic qubits, as controlled interactions are vital for entanglement generation. Unlike photonic qubits, which typically exhibit weak or no interaction, electronic qubits can entangle through the Coulomb forces revealed in these experiments. This opens up possibilities for device architectures where spin or orbital degrees of freedom of electronic qubits intertwine through controlled Coulomb interactions. The experimental advancements represent a crucial step in the manipulation of single electrons in nanoscale conductors, enabling researchers to enter the nonlinear regime of electronic quantum optics. While challenges remain, these three experiments provide reasons to be optimistic about further advancements in the field of electronic quantum optics in the future.Figure. The eminent scientist Margarita del Val will give a lecture at UIB on interdisciplinary research in epidemics The CSIC Representation in the Balearic Islands, the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Institute of Cross-disciplinary Physics in Complex Systems (IFISC, UIB-CSIC) are organizing the lecture "Investigación interdisciplinar en epidemias desde la Plataforma de Salud Global del CSIC: ¿preparados para la próxima pandemia?" given by the leading scientist Margarita del Val. As coordinator of the CSIC Global Health Platform and expert in immunity and vaccines against viral diseases, Margarita del Val will share her valuable knowledge and experience in this scientific dissemination activity. The lecture will take place on Tuesday 20 June at 11 am, in the Aula Magna of the Guillem Cifre de Colonya building, on the UIB campus. Admission is free and open to the public. Margarita del Val is an internationally renowned scientific researcher, virologist and immunologist. Her research, currently carried out at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa in Madrid, focuses on the study of the immune response to viral infections and immunological memory, especially in relation to the functioning of vaccines. Throughout her career, she has led numerous research projects and published high-impact scientific articles. Margarita del Val played a leading role in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. She coordinates the Plataforma Temàtica Interdisciplinària Salut Global del CSIC, which aims to address current and future challenges related to the pandemic. In addition, he represented Spain at the European Medicines Agency and is a member of the Royal National Academy of Pharmacy and the Expert Advisory Committee on Vaccines of the Community of Madrid. In addition to her scientific work, Margarita del Val is dedicated to communicating scientific knowledge to society. IFISC (UIB-CSIC) researchers present a new quantum method of pattern classification Researchers at IFISC (UIB-CSIC) have proposed a novel method for pattern classification using a single nonlinear quantum oscillator instead of a lattice of spins (bits). The study, published in the prestigious journal Physical Review Letters, focuses on the implementation of the associative memory method and classification algorithms using AI. Until now, pattern classification tasks were performed by implementing bit or spin networks in which these elements interact with each other classically or quantum, respectively. However, these methods present problems in terms of the ability to recognize a large number of different patterns, as this capability is strongly limited by the size of the system. The proposed method published by the IFISC researchers is based on replacing the spin lattice by a single quantum oscillator periodically forced and with nonlinear dissipation terms. These nonlinear terms allow the system to have a metastable phase in which the patterns to be identified can be encoded in coherent states of light that act as attractors, to which the system has a tendency to direct its dynamics The energy levels of the quantum oscillator can encode the different patterns that the method will classify. This is an important advantage since it works with a single system, as opposed to a network of bits or spins in which it is necessary to build a lattice of interacting elements. In addition, the study demonstrates that with a smaller system size more patterns can be discerned, overcoming the theoretical limit presented by quantum bit lattices. This novel method of pattern classification is performed in the transient phase of the system, allowing results to be obtained more quickly and, therefore, preventing quantum information from being lost. The study represents a significant advance in the field of pattern recognition and classification using quantum physics. Artificial neural networks are brain-inspired computational systems that can solve and model numerous types of tasks, from pattern and speech recognition to big data analysis. Pint of Science 2023: the festival in Palma that brings science closer to the bar IFISC and IMEDEA, two CSIC-UIB institutes located in the Balearic Islands, are organizing the fourth edition of the Pint of Science Festival in Palma, with the participation of researchers from the UIB. The event will take place at the Café A Tres Bandas in Plaza Barcelona, Palma, on 22, 23 and 24 May at 19:00.This outreach festival is held simultaneously and coordinated in several countries around the world. Spain is the second country with more participation, filling bars and cities of science for three consecutive days. Pint of Science (PoS), the international science outreach festival that proposes a meeting between leading researchers and the public in a relaxed and relaxed atmosphere, the bars, returns to Palma on 22, 23 and 24 May. Two research institutes will be in charge of organizing this new edition, which will be the fourth in the Balearic Islands: the Institute of Cross-disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC CSIC-UIB) and the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA CSIC-UIB), both located in Mallorca and accredited as units of excellence María de Maeztu. Thus, by entering the bar, the public will be able to explore how the brain works, dive with the organisms that inhabit the microscopic world, understand the mechanisms that will affect the rise in sea level, find out how hoaxes spread through the observation of a drunk person or decipher what artificial intelligence has to say in the field of computational flamenco. These and other proposals will be presented in Palma during the three days of the festival. The event will take place on May 22, 23 and 24 at the A Tres Bandas café in Plaza Barcelona, Palma. All sessions are free and will start at 19:00. The current affairs and diversity of scientific topics, components of the festival's program On Monday 22nd, IMEDEA will open the festival within the framework of the Ocean Night project -a CSIC initiative that seeks to raise awareness about the relationship between our society and the ocean- with three talks ranging from the micro to the macro scale: first, researcher Marco Polin will open a window to the fascinating world of microbial motility. Next, Iris Hendricks will immerse us in marine environments to talk about our great allies against climate change: aquatic plants. Ángel Amores will close the session by showing us how storms and sea levels are causing extreme events in our region. On Tuesday 23rd it will be the turn of IFISC researchers. With Pablo Rosillo we will be able to understand, with the help of new computer algorithms, why flamenco continues to captivate audiences around the world centuries later. On the other hand, with Manuel Miranda we will learn how to predict things like airplane delays through a mathematical tool that describes random trajectories, such as those of drunk people. Finally, with María Martínez we will discover one of the most important infrastructures in the world, which hides behind a plug. All of them are PhD students in physics of complex systems. On Wednesday 24 will close the festival with the research being developed at UIB. Through these presentations we will learn about the next challenges of modern neuroscience from Celia Garau, PhD in neurophysiology; the power of perinatal nutrition with Pere Bibiloni, PhD student; and what does it mean "false thin" with Carmen Garcia, also a PhD student in fundamental biology and health sciences. PoS aims, since its creation in 2013 at Imperial College London, to bring researchers closer to the public, taking advantage of the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the bars to facilitate their interaction. Spain is the second country with the second highest participation in the world, being held in 54 Spanish cities. Specifically, this 8th edition breaks records again: 537 talks spread over more than 300 events, with the participation of more than 545 scientists (232 female scientists and 258 male scientists).
