Master Thesis on Monday Oct 10, 2022 at 12:00 Place: Zoom Seminar Title: Multilayer analysis of online social interactions Speaker: José María Ramos Fernández, IFISC (CSIC-UIB) Abstract: Abstract: the development of online platforms and our capacity to collect data of individuals from these has drastically changed the way scientist explore human society. Social systems can be understood as a superposition of various social networks, where nodes and edges represent individuals and their social relations, respectively. While these networks have been mainly studied as aggregates, only recently new theoretical frameworks have allowed to understand their multidimensional nature. In this work, we analyze a multirrelational social system from a massive multiplayer online game, consisting on three networks of different types of one-to-one interactions (friendship, communication and trade). Firstly, we study their structure separately using the usual single-layer approach. We find that two of them have a very similar structure while the third one is denser and presents a slightly different connectivity pattern. For the second part, we implement measurements that consider the multidimensional nature of the system and give insights on how players behave differently depending on the interaction under consideration. The results obtained with these measures indicate that players behave similarly in all the different layers, but that they do so with different people. Master Thesis on Wednesday Oct 05, 2022 at 12:15 Place: IFISC Seminar Room Title: Epidemiological approach to tau propagation in Alzheimer’s disease Speaker: Gorka Buenvarón Campo, IFISC Abstract: Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the deposition, over decades, of pathogenic forms of two proteins, amyloid-beta and misfolded tau. The study focuses on the misfolded forms of tau within neurons and considers the so called prionic hypothesis:&nbsp;a pathological tau molecule may induce its misfolding in a healthy tau protein. The transmission of the misfolded tau molecules through synapses is also considered. Thus, an epidemic model that considers epidemic transmission among 5 areas in the brain (for a single hemisphere) is set up: Entorhinal Cortex (EC), Hyppocampus, Inferior Temporal Gyrus, Middle Frontal Gyrus and Calcarine Cortex. The model uses both available experimental neurochemical information, that quantifies excitation and inhibition, and neuroimaging data as a proxy of inter-region connectivity. The model is very predictive in determining the main experimentally available information, that is the sequence in which the disease appears starting from the known area where it originates (EC). IFISC Seminar on Wednesday Oct 05, 2022 at 14:30 Place: IFISC Seminar Room Title: Synchronization in complex networks under uncertainty Speaker: Lluís Arola Fernández , IFISC Abstract: The theory behind the synchronization of network-coupled oscillators is solid and has significantly advanced lately, especially in the mean-field problem. However, real systems have complex interactions that difficult the analytical treatment. Most existing results rely on black-boxes that hinder interpretation and require global information, while available data is usually incomplete. In this seminar, I will overview some results of my PhD thesis motivated by these limitations, including methods to predict the non-linear amplification of noise from network weights to the synchronization onset and the role of dyadic and higher-order interactions in synchrony optimization, a geometric unfolding of the synchronized state which explains the emergence of synchronization bombs, and algebraic shortcuts to find critical points using rank-reduced network models. Unlike other similar studies carried out previously, our work will also focus on the behavior of the fluctuations of the system which become of crucial importance at the quantum scale. To achieve this, the work is divided into three main blocks which are the theoretical background, the study of the stationary operation of the system and the optimization of the thermal machine performance. Master Thesis on Tuesday Oct 04, 2022 at 10:00 Place: IFISC Seminar Room Title: Deep learning applied to the analysis of dissolved carbon dioxide in coastal areas of the Balearic Sea Speaker: Akshay Tiwari, IFISC Abstract: This work studies the changes in the sea surface dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2 (diss.)) at the Estaci&oacute;n de Investigaci&oacute;n Costera del Faro de Cap Salines, a pristine site at the Southeastern tip of Mallorca (GPS 3.05457&deg;E, 39.26552&deg;N). More specifically, the dependence of CO2 (diss.) on a number of recorded parameters like atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 (atm.)) and temperature rise, which may be the result of direct or increased human activities, is uncovered by the modelling of CO2 (diss.). This modelling of CO2 (diss.), is done with Deep Learning (DL) methods applied to a relatively small ecological dataset and then these DL methods are compared to each other. This work also shows and generalises how DL methods can give reasonable results when applied to small tabular datasets in general. Along with the analysis of different DL methods (Deep Symbolic Regression, Permutation Convolutions and Self-Attention), an architecture based on different methods (Self-Attention, Mish activation function, Ranger optimiser and Learning rate finder), which are selected after reviewing and testing ideas from the literature, is also presented in this work.
