Master Thesis on Tuesday Oct 04, 2022 at 10:00 Place: IFISC Seminar Room Title: Deep learning applied to the analysis of dissolved carbon dioxide in coastal areas of the Balearic Sea Speaker: Akshay Tiwari, IFISC Abstract: This work studies the changes in the sea surface dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2 (diss.)) at the Estaci&oacute;n de Investigaci&oacute;n Costera del Faro de Cap Salines, a pristine site at the Southeastern tip of Mallorca (GPS 3.05457&deg;E, 39.26552&deg;N). More specifically, the dependence of CO2 (diss.) on a number of recorded parameters like atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 (atm.)) and temperature rise, which may be the result of direct or increased human activities, is uncovered by the modelling of CO2 (diss.). This modelling of CO2 (diss.), is done with Deep Learning (DL) methods applied to a relatively small ecological dataset and then these DL methods are compared to each other. This work also shows and generalises how DL methods can give reasonable results when applied to small tabular datasets in general. Along with the analysis of different DL methods (Deep Symbolic Regression, Permutation Convolutions and Self-Attention), an architecture based on different methods (Self-Attention, Mish activation function, Ranger optimiser and Learning rate finder), which are selected after reviewing and testing ideas from the literature, is also presented in this work. Unlike other similar studies carried out previously, our work will also focus on the behavior of the fluctuations of the system which become of crucial importance at the quantum scale. To achieve this, the work is divided into three main blocks which are the theoretical background, the study of the stationary operation of the system and the optimization of the thermal machine performance. Master Thesis on Wednesday Oct 05, 2022 at 12:15 Place: IFISC Seminar Room Title: Epidemiological approach to tau propagation in Alzheimer’s disease Speaker: Gorka Buenvarón Campo, IFISC Abstract: Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the deposition, over decades, of pathogenic forms of two proteins, amyloid-beta and misfolded tau. The study focuses on the misfolded forms of tau within neurons and considers the so called prionic hypothesis:&nbsp;a pathological tau molecule may induce its misfolding in a healthy tau protein. The transmission of the misfolded tau molecules through synapses is also considered. Thus, an epidemic model that considers epidemic transmission among 5 areas in the brain (for a single hemisphere) is set up: Entorhinal Cortex (EC), Hyppocampus, Inferior Temporal Gyrus, Middle Frontal Gyrus and Calcarine Cortex. The model uses both available experimental neurochemical information, that quantifies excitation and inhibition, and neuroimaging data as a proxy of inter-region connectivity. The model is very predictive in determining the main experimentally available information, that is the sequence in which the disease appears starting from the known area where it originates (EC). IFISC Seminar on Wednesday Sep 28, 2022 at 14:30 Place: IFISC Seminar Room Title: Hybrid normal-superconducting Aharonov-Bohm quantum thermal device Speaker: Gianmichele Blasi, University of Geneva Abstract: In this seminar I will talk about a recent work we published on the arxiv (arXiv:2208.14336). In this work we propose and theoretically investigate the behavior of a ballistic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring when embedded in a N-S two-terminal setup, consisting of a normal metal (N) and superconducting (S) leads. This device is based on available current technologie and we show that it constitutes a promising hybrid quantum thermal device, as quantum heat engine and quantum thermal rectifier. Remarkably, we evidence the interplay of single-particle quantum interferences in the AB ring and of the superconducting properties of the structure to achieve the hybrid operating mode for this quantum device. Its efficiency as a quantum heat engine reaches 55% of the Carnot efficiency, and we predict thermal rectification factor attaining 350%. These predictions make this device highly promising for future phase-coherent caloritronic nanodevices. However, there exist two distinct types of confinement, namely, trivial and topological. In this talk I will discuss and compare both cases [1]. Trivial confinement corresponds to the same polarity of top gates, which is opposed to that of all bottom ones. Topological confinement requires the polarity of part of the top-bottom pairs of gates to be reversed [2,3]. We demonstrate that the main qualitative difference between trivial and topological bound states manifests itself in their magnetic field dependence.
